Last month, Patrick Hartley, a distinguished member of the Kenan-Flagler community, joined the Kenan Institute as a Fellow.  He has been a Professor of the Practice of Finance at Kenan-Flagler for nearly twelve years. Currently, he also serves as President of the board of directors of the Kenan-Flagler Business School Foundation.

A long-time and passionate Tar Heel, Hartley is a graduate of UNC’s BSBA program.  Since returning to Chapel Hill with his family, he has been actively engaged at Kenan-Flagler both inside and outside the classroom.

“During my undergraduate years at UNC-Chapel Hill, I concluded that education is truly a life-long endeavor and importance of dealing with change and challenges.  I have also been fortunate to have developed so many long-term relationships at Chapel Hill, which have been so important to me over the years, personally and professionally,” Hartley said

Through his teaching at Kenan-Flagler, Hartley has tried to pass along some of his life experiences and priorities to his students. For him, teaching is “a great joy and privilege.” In addition, Hartley says the role of mentoring is important to him-during the students’ time in Chapel Hill and long after they graduate.

Hartley plans to bring his expertise, vision, and many long-term private sector relationships to his new role at The Kenan Institute in order to help further the mission and identify expansion opportunities.

patHartley2“I believe this new role with Institute will allow me to help raise global awareness within the non-profit and business communities, alumni and non-alumni, for our exciting programs, initiatives, and academic research. Ultimately, greater awareness and new sources of financial support, will support the mission and growth of both the Institute and Kenan-Flagler,” said Hartley. He added, “We need to tell our story.  When we do, my bet is that others will see the vision and get excited about what we are doing here.”

He is still in the early stages of spreading the word. Currently, Hartley is focused on identifying candidates for Senior Fellow and Fellow appointments, as well as candidates for membership for the Institute’s Board of Advisors and Roundtable.

Hartley concluded, “ I am so pleased to be a member of the Kenan Institute team, especially at this point in time  We have highly regarded research.  We are fortunate to have so many existing Institute programs and Center affiliates, including The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, The Wood Center for Real Estate Studies, The Urban Investment Strategies Center, The Institute of Private Capital, and the Center of Sports Business.  The foundation of these Centers, and others, is already well established and there is significant opportunity for growth. Also, I also look forward to learning more about our Kenan Scholars program, which is exciting for all of us within the Kenan-Flagler community, especially the students.  I want to help to continue to enrich the experience for them, including finding new sources of financial support. “

Hartley will continue to serve as an adjunct professor and in his role with the KFBS Foundation.
